FDM, also known as FFF printed plastics often times will have near-injection molded strength in the XY direction but may need special considering for strength requirements in the printed direction (Z). Typically through careful design and part orientation during processing these issues can be avoided.

For prototyping additive is typically by far the most economical approach. Not only from a cost perspective, but time as well. Modern additive, whether it is FDM/FFF or SLA in plastics, or SLS or EBM for metals, is capable of producing functional parts that are suitable for prototype applications and product applications.
